Traditional town centres need to rethink their approach, and even reinvent themselves, to offer unique experiences so that ‘main street’ businesses can survive and thrive.

This is true all over the world, not just in Australia, and a common theme across various studies is that local governments need to show initiative and leadership in developing those experiences by helping make town centres vibrant and active spaces.

In our little corner of the world, Bundaberg Regional Council (BRC) is investing in long term projects such as the upcoming Bundaberg CBD revitalisation. The recently completed Burnett Heads Streetscape project is another example of the capital works we are doing to breathe new life into towns around the region.

However, there are also plenty of things we can do that don’t involve major capital works and can be done very quickly with the help of the community. One such project is the Love Bundy campaign.

BRC has partnered with the Bundaberg Business Enterprise Centre and the Bundaberg & Districts Chamber of Commerce to work with local traders on the initiative which is designed to make it easier for consumers to shop locally.

Some key features of the Love Bundy campaign include:

  • Small businesses have the opportunity to ‘buy in’ to the campaign and have access to widespread marketing activities that might otherwise cost them significantly more.
  • Consumers will be able to take advantage of special offers and incentives.
  • We will also be staging special events and place activations with the assistance of organisations such as Creative Regions to add life and colour to the city area.

Some of the benefits we hope to realise by making it easier for the community to shop locally include:

  • Retaining more money within our local economy
  • Direct job creation in small businesses
  • Showcasing Bundaberg as a destination and a unique experience
  • Creating an environment that encourages new businesses to start and grow
